I take my running shoes seriously, since comfort while pounding mile after mile really does boil down to the quality of the shoe. My standard shoe for the past 5 years has been the Mizuno motion control with a straight last. I've frequented a few running shops in the city, but many do not carry the particular model I demand. Fleet Feet was a pleasant surprise, not only did they carry many different Mizuno shoes (including my favorite) but the girl helping me out was extremely friendly and we chatted about local races and the like while I tried on my shoes....which of course fit because I always get the exact same size time after time. The prices are pretty standard- there was no discount (maybe if I praise them enough on yelp I'll get a discount!) but they do have a cool program where you get some kind of discount once you spend over $200, which is about 2 pairs of shoes. I left with happy feet, and a new booklet of running routes in the area, which I will be sure to check out, since I run the same 6 mile loop day after day.

I just started training for a marathon and wanted to do it right. I went in to fleet feet and they watched me walk. The guy picked out 4 pairs of shoes based on my walking (some kind of voodoo magic thing). After trying 4 pairs I settled on a really comfy pair of brooks. I dropped an insole in and bought some running shorts, 2 shirts and 2 pairs of socks. All in all I spent over $300 there to get the gear I need to train.

Then I went for a 9 mile run.

Wow. My feet have never felt so good after a long run before. My calves and knees were killing me but my feet, oh boy were my feet great. Highly recommended over trying to fit yourself for shoes.

In less than 10 minutes, I was in and out of there with the perfect trail runner's shoe.  After, of course, they watched me parade around the store shoeless, analyzing the way I trod about and how my feet look when they hit the floor,  before they measured my feet with a contraption I have not seen since my childhood (which I wish they hadn't since I now know my left foot is disappointingly larger than the other).

Otherwise, I'm very pleased with the level of service there, and am now going to hit the trail in my new shoes (the Brooks Cascadia 3's in Magma Red)

Monday morning, 7am. First day of Boot Camp and I show up in my best Dri-Fit, Clima-Cool, mesh/poly blend clothes and a brand new pair of Nike running shoes.

Jenn (boot camp instructor extraordinaire) takes one look at my shoes and says "Yeah...those aren't going to work"

Me: "But, but, they're brand new! And sync up to my iPod! And are really cool looking!"

Jen: "I don't care...get some real running shoes"

So on her recommendation, I head over to Fleet Feet. Let me back track a bit to say I'm not a runner. Hell, I played soccer for years and the running was my least favorite part (but I was really good at the whole kicking the ball thing)

Anyhow, I walked into Fleet Feet without knowing the difference between a $60 running shoe and a $160 one. The sales guy was uber patient with me and after measuring my foot about 17 different ways, gave me a number of shoes to try. After 20 minutes and around 37 laps around the store I walked out with a brand new pair of Asics.

This morning at Boot Camp Jenn looked at my feet and almost shed tears of joy. After running in my new shoes, I felt the same way.
Thanks, Fleet Feet!

ps...did this little review make you think "Gee, maybe I should look into Boot Camp?"  If so, check out:

So my husband has really wide feet (sorry honey) and runs 5 miles a day. We were replacing shoes every 3-4 months. After a trip to Fleet Feet, we were educated on why my husband is blowing through shoes. They measured his foot, laced them up and watched him run around the store. They suggested a New Balance shoe with a roll bar.

Now we only replace shoes every 6-7 months. They even keep a record of the shoes he buys so I can stop in and grab a new pair when he isn't with me.

I will warn you and say they charge $20-$40 for the same brands and models you can find elsewhere....but you pay for their expertise....and Fleet knows feet!

This is the only place I know of that offers a proper, yet quick gait analysis of your foot; sells the best (BEST) running socks in the world (Bolaga); has a respectable assortment of sports bra choices; and teaches you about your foot and how it impacts your running and injuries. If you are serious about running, you'll quickly notice that nearly every runner around the Bay Area references Fleet Feet. It's a marathon runner's choice!

When I decided to finally invest in running shoes I chose this place based on Yelp reviews.  They were very helpful and did a good job fitting me in the right shoes and insole.  I will go back.  Pricey but nice stuff.

I just picked up running a few months ago. I actually always hated it, and then one day, I decided to go for a run with my roommate at Chrissy Field, and decided I really liked it. Weird. Kind of wish I'd discovered that a little earlier in life! Oh, well.

Anyway, since I've never really been a runner, I definitely didn't know what shoes I needed. I'd been running in my crappy old sneakers from the outlets or DSW - not good! After running Bay to Breakers in them (so much better than walking-and-drinking it, in my opinion!), they seriously needed to be retired. My roommate recommended I check out Fleet Feet, and I'm glad I did.

The very nice guy helping me took a lot of time to evaluate my foot size, stride, etc, and I'm really happy with the shoes I ended up with. So far, so good (just got them last weekend, but already they are making a big difference). They were $125, but I think that's totally reasonable in exchange for not injuring myself! They're actually the Nike ones with the chip, just coincidentally, so I'm thinking about getting the armband. I think the chip is only compatible with the Nano, unfortunately, and I still have an old-school iPod mini.

I was also really impressed with their selection of sports bras - they carry Enell, which I've always had to order online before. I actually picked up a new one, the Fiona, by Moving Comfort, which I liked the one time I ran in it so far.

I'm looking forward to doing their Livestrong Sunset Run coming up. Oh, and you can donate your old sneaks here and they'll pass them along to Nike who'll chop them up to make playgrounds and other athletic facilities. Way cool!

I've been to a lot of shoe stores in my time and bought the fresh kicks that you can go stylin' in when I go to the gym or out for a walk or run but it was never the right shoe to get the job done of a real athlete.
And by no means am I a true athlete but Saturday 5/10/08 I took the first step to opening my athletic potential when I enter FLEET FEET!

The moment I walked in the door I was greeted, sat down, and asked what kind of shoe are you looking for?

My man that sat me down was great. He was great ! he checked out my feet had me take off me sock and shoes and walk around for a bit then did like 2 different foot measurements for each foot.  After all that my man take off for a few seconds and come back with about 4 pairs of shoes.

Now what was a killer experience for me was that dude literally put the shoe on my feet and laced them up for me. I was like both helpless and amazed at the same time, is that possible?
I had to step in and lace up the 3rd pair but I guess I didn't do that right because I had slippage in the heel of the shoes so, he showed my special looped you can do when lacing the shoe up for a tighter grab at the heel.  That was fly!

Going to Fleet Feet was the most educational shoe experience I ever had. I didn't know anything about pronating feet and the GATE. I think that stands for something but I don't know what; shame on me.

When I finally left I only had one pair of shoes but it was the right pair damn it!  I'm so ready for the Bay To Breakers.  I might not win because I'm not a kenyian but I won't get DNF because my shoes let me down.

I'm also going to start looking forward to those tuesday night runs and becoming a stronger runner thanks to FLEET FEET.

I'll be back I forgot to buy a heart rate monitor.

I've bought three pairs of running shoes from Fleet Feet. The first time I went, they were really great about figuring out what type of fit I'd need, giving me time to try them out ("Just go jog around the blog and tell us what you think!") and offering tips on training. I went for a run in the first pair and they really didn't feel good, so I took them back -- the good folks at Fleet Feet were terrific once again, helping me select another pair that ended up working out much better.

I just got a new pair last month to replace the old ones, and the experience was just as good (they showed me a special way to tie the laces that helps get the shoe tight where it needs to be, which is very cool). I love that they remember what you bought before and what you didn't like and why. They know which models are being replaced by new ones and when, what's comparable to another brand, and anything else you can think of.

I've never gone on any of their runs, but I keep meaning to and it's great that they offer those. And I haven't bought clothes or accessories there, but they seem to be pretty serious about sports bra fitting, so maybe I'll go back for that.

This is not the Sports Authority. You will probably pay a lot of money here for good running shoes, more than you'd pay in the basement of DSW Shoe Warehouse. In exchange, you get personal service that will more than likely help you avoid hurting yourself. It's worth it for me.

I'd bookmarked Fleet Feet ages ago but never went due to sheer laziness. But I finally headed it over to Chestnut Street today with old shoes in a bag. Chris was great.  He looked at my sad sorry shoes that I've been using and pulled out a bunch he thought I might like. He also measured my feet, watched me jog, and helped me pick out a brand new pair of shoes.  He even showed me how to tie the laces so they fit nice and snug.  I haven't had someone tie my shoelaces in years.  Oh and they will keep your shoe selections and other shoes that you liked but didn't buy on file, so even if you lose your shoes or lose your memory, it'll be available to you when you come in the next time.

Let it be known that for years I have obsessively read reviews on yelp before any major purchase or outing...but today is my first review.  That is how awesome my experience at Fleet Feet was.

Also, I am long overdue  to give Monk's Kettle an amazing rating - the beer has done so much for me, the least I can do is write a review.

Anyway...so fleet feet.

1. Adorable owner man Brett- very helpful and patient.  Similar to a  Sensei studying his subject he was the master of feet and shoes.  Anyone that can get me to run back and forth in a store is certainly a powerful human and someone to be respected. ;)

2. Price - although my shoes were a steep $120...that is what they were everywhere else I looked online.  For me, running shoes are worth the cost and since Fleet Feet takes all the time you need to make sure you have the perfect pair - it is especially worth it.

3.  They save all your information.  Then the next time you need shoes you don't have to go through the whole fit song and dance...and even better you can call ahead, pay ahead, and then they will run your shoes out to you so you don't have to play the Marina parking game!

Pretty much, fleet is a total love.  Go there today.

I'm completely a Sports Basement addict so I felt pangs of guilt when I walked into Fleet Feet at the urging of my runner friends. They guaranteed me that this was the place to get the perfect running shoes for your feet, even if you have no idea how to pick them out. Most of all, I was dying for shoes that didn't blister my feet like my then-runners.

My friends were right!

I felt a bit silly having my foot measured, as I feel by my mid-twenties I should know it by now. Apparently I wear a size and a half bigger in running shoes. A women's 10.5. WOW. More amazingly, the girl helping me talked me into buying snow-shoe sized runners. Next she examined me standing, and then had me walk up and down the store, watching me like a hawk. She picked out a pair of shoes of a brand I'd never heard of.  I was surprised they were completely affordable,  (do I dare say, Sports Basement prices??) and even showed me how she tied them in a different way so my heel is snug. 2 months later, they're still the best runners I've ever had and I haven't even seen a hint of a blister.  I'll definitely be back when I wear these out!

Not a huge selection of shoes here, but this is the type of running shoe shop where almost *every* shoe in the story is a great shoe, so in a way their selection outclasses many much larger stores.

The staff all seem to be runners, and/or are well versed in the finer points of shoe selection.

Tip:  Bring in your old shoes you've been running in.  They will look at your wear pattern and be able to better recommend specific shoes to give you support in the optimum areas.

I'm on my 3rd Fleet Feet sponsored half marathon training program, and I thought it just might be time to yelp these guys!

From all the great reviews, Its fairly obvious that Fleet Feet is awesome. But there's a lot of stuff that isn't talked about on these reviews. One of them is Brett, the owner. Did you know that he knows all the lyrics to the Humpty Dance? Or that he's an all-around, super cool dude?

I bet most people aren't aware that Fleet Feet regularly organizes  runs for local charities. (i.e.: Students Run Oakland, Girls on the Run) Fleet Feet also collaborates with trainers like Marathon Matt to help bring out the closet runner in all of us!

Oh, and my own experience... I bought my first pair of "serious" running shoes about 6 months ago. I can't really say much about their bra-fitting service, but the shoe-fitting service is excellent... now if they only served complementary champagne during the fitting process......hmmmm.

I *just* picked up running this last summer.  I had been told by at least three friends that I should go to Fleet Feet on Chestnut to buy my shoes, so I went.  The service was great - friendly and knowledgeable employees.  I was fitted and selected my shoes.  Unfortunately, they did not work out for me.  I had run about 15 miles in them and was experiencing cramping (which I didn't have with my old shoes).  So, I went back to exchange them.  I was fitted again and found another pair (different brand and style).  They gave me 100% credit on the old shoes even though they were clearly worn and used.  My new pair is awesome and I've run about 200 miles in them without a problem.

I will, without a doubt, go back to Fleet Feet to buy my next pair.  With the kind of service they've given me, they've earned my loyalty.  You can't go wrong with this place!

I bought my last 3 pairs of running shoes from Fleet Feet, and they're great. They will measure your gate, analyze your walking/running, and measure each foot to make sure that the size and type of shoe is exactly what you need. I thought it was pretty funny when they told me that (my feet) were unstable. But, it was all worth it because they helped me find the perfect pair of shoes to run my marathon in, and another great pair after I needed to recover from my marathon with "regular" workouts.

I'm not a runner.  Let's just get that out in the open.   I started working out after a long, long, loooooooooong time not doing anything.  Did I mention it was a long time?  Many people reading this review were in Pampers the last time I was involved in seriously working out.

Last Feb (2007) I started and my current program involves a daily 3-mile equivalent cardio workout, core-oriented strength training 2x a week and a long walk (for fun, more accurately defined as a 'mosey with hills') on Sunday.  I had been wearing the crap shoes I bought at some crap store that I knew weren't right but frankly was intimidated by the idea of going to a store (any store) where the collective body fat was less than my left thigh.

A long-ago broken ankle was giving me problems and it would become sore long before the rest of me was ready to quit so I grew a pair (of ovaries - okay, an extra pair) and presented myself at Fleet Feet.

I put myself in Brett's hands and walked out with a pair of Asics that literally changed my gait completely.  I realized that I had been in shoes that made me walk and work out like my feet were bound.  As a result, I no longer have pain after my daily workouts and my Sunday walks have doubled in distance.  My right ankle will start to bark a little on the last half mile but its definitely not anywhere near Pain Town.

Good shoes aren't cheap but their prices are very competitive, the service was excellent and I will go back for my next pair... and the next... and the next, etc.

A tiny little store tucked away in the Marina district, you might even pass it by completely if you weren't looking specifically for it.  So if you're looking for athletic shoes, sports bras or other sporty accessories keep your eyes open... cause you don't wanna miss this place!!!

After realizing that I sorely needed (pun intended) a new pair of running shoes I headed over to Sports Basement... but after talking to a couple people there I just didn't feel like I was getting the best advice (as they were saying different things).  Someone recommended Fleet Feet and though I usually avoid the Marina Dist. I decided to check it out.

The girl who helped me out was wonderful and spent tons of time with me to figure out what would work best and what felt best to me.  They even encourage you to run around the store, out the door and down the block to really check out the shoe!  After quite some time I began to feel guilty for trying so many shoes (some multiple times) and making her haul boxes to and from the back of the store... but she kept right on haulin' and told me to stop feeling guilty!

After many, many pairs of shoes I found ones that were a little bouncy and supportive in just the right way and are just what I need right now!  I was then told about their fantastic return policy just in case I changed my mind or had any issues - it just shows how confident they are in their products and their salespeople!  Cute and friendly guy at the register is a bonus!

Highly recommend Fleet Feet for their Absolutely-No-Pressure sales tactic, friendly staff, cool little store, and great return policy!  Now get movin'!

If you are new to running or have issues with your feet this is the place to go!  Brett has been great in helping me find the best shoe to avoid blisters.  The customer service is also outstanding.  They didn't have a shoe in stock, but they held a pair for almost a week until I could make it to the store for them.  You won't find that at most places!

I've been shopping at Fleet Feet for over 10 years now. First in the Sacremento area Roseville store and now here in the city. You cannot get better service in any kind of store in the city but you definitely pay for it. Try to come here when they got sales, otherwise you will go broke.

My friend Lisa and I decided last spring that we needed to do something to get ourselves out of the bars and in shape.  We found out about the San Jose 1/2 marathon and decided that we could absolutely run 13.1 miles, even though we were borderline lazy and had never run more than 5-6 miles at a time.  Enter Fleet Feet.  FF kitted us out w/new shoes based on our wonky feet/gait, "the shorts" and most importantly, an excellent training program headed by Marathon Matt.

The 2-3 weekly group runs were fun and motivating (except for the 11 mile run, where I sort of yelled at Marathon Matt because I thought he was lying/hiding the turnaround marker) and I loved that the coaches were able to answer pretty much all of our training/injury/health related questions.

We finished the 1/2 marathon yesterday faster than expected and relatively pain-free (except for Lisa's foot of course.)  I am definitely hooked and plan to run another 1/2 and possibly a full next year because I loved the training and the race so much, blisters and missing toenails notwithstanding.  Thanks FF and Marathon Matt!

"I decided to go to Fleet Feet because I thought I would be treating my feet right. One year later  go to a physical therapist for knee pain and discover that Fleet Feet recommended exactly the wrong kind of shoe for my body and feet. Way to go!! Also, after I paid for the $110 shoes I saw them somewhere else for $65."

Shortly after I posted my initial review of Fleet Feet I was contact by the manager. He offerd to replace the problematic shoes with a pair more suited for my needs. Later when I went in to the store he was equally apologetic. Kudos to Fleet Feet for superior costomer service.

I really needed a new pair of shoes and came to this Marina area store. I have always thought of Nike as a "poser" shoe (I have no idea why) and never took the company seriously. That was until I was fitted for one. Initially the shoe was too "floaty" and I came back to the store ready to return it. The woman told me to give it another week or two and here I am, almost a month later. Running almost everyday on the best pair of running shoes I have ever owned.

Super high marks for knowledgeable and courteous staff. They even helped me configure a polar watch I purchased from another store.

I apparently have this fantastic notion in my head that I'm going to run the SF Marathon in July and the fine folks at Fleet Feet were happy to support my delusions by providing me with a perfect pair of shoes with no pushy sales and a good analysis of my stride to fit me in the right shoes.  Thanks Fleet Feet! When I die halfway through the Marathon, be sure to send flowers to my funeral!

If you need running shoes, Fleet Feet is the place to go. You bring in your old pair, the very helpful and nice people there analyze your running style and recommend a few options that would work with the way you run. There is some running slang thrown out there, which I react with a smile and nod. You put on each of the options, run around the store and then select the most comfortable pair. Brilliant! I would've never picked out my Mizunos on my own, but now I am obsessed with them. It's really hard to believe that I would ever become obsessed with my running shoes, but alas, I am.

The service alone is worth the trek down to the heart of the Marina. And don't get me started on the selection. I  also picked up a cute running top to replace the scraggly t-shirts I normally run in.

My husband and I relocated from Chicago this year.  I wanted to join a half marathon training group.  I just completed my first half marathon through the Fleet Feet Training/Marathon Matt.  Brett and Kim at Fleet Feet were fantastic from the helpful staff at the store to providing a quality training for all level types.  I highly recommend shopping at Fleet Feet and utilizing their training programs.  Thanks Fleet Feet.

One of my best girlfriends and I were discussing the gym one day and how important footwear is (seriously, this was probably done over a massive amount of pasta from Pasta Pomodoro while drinking fatty beer) and I mentioned how I hadnt bought new tennis shoes in about......ya, i couldnt even remember.
At that point I knew I needed to invest in some good, solid footwear. I had heard lots of positive things about Fleet Feet so I trekked over to the Marina to check it out. WOW! I was so comfortable from the minute I walked in. They started to help me right away, asking me about my workout routines and watched me walk up and down the store so they could determine what the best kind of shoe would be for me. Aftger that, the sales guy brought out three different kinds of shoes for me to try on. He even commented on my socks (which were purple and white striped with a frog on them...yah, dont ask, i i have no excuse) and said they were by far the best socks he'd seen all day. Its my attention to detail and unique sense of sock style that makes me stand out.

They also fitted me with some great insoles to help with my nonexistant arch and the fact i tend to walk with my feet turned out. All in all, a fantastic (though somewhat expensive but TOTALLY worth it) experience.

These guys know their shoes.  Even if it is a small selection of them.  I been able to get some pretty good shoes for my half marathon runs that I do.   Though I wish they have a bit more variety on the shoes.  Highly reccomend.

Went there yesterday after looking aimlessly at running shoes at the mall, having no idea what to look for in a shoe . My current running shoes are definitely not the right kind for my feet. The woman that worked with me was very helpful and knowledgeable, and pulled out a variety of shoes for me to try on. She also let me know that I can return the shoes for up to 30 days, even if I've been running in them. I ended up dropping $135+tax on some shoes, but they are in a whole different world than my last pair. They are also incredibly, futuristic-ly ugly, like all running shoes. Who decided that running shoes had to look so freakish? Definitely go to Fleet Feet over the other shoe stores for running shoes.

Hear that? That silence is the sound of me no longer complaining about how my feet hurt after I went and had a chat with the lovely people at Fleet Feet. Now, true, I haven't actually used them yet, but I am confident that they are going to be fabulous because the second I put on the Sauconys recommended especially for me, it felt like I was walking on very supportive air.

Thanks for all of the great reviews (esp. Cooter C!) that convinced me to march my generous-sized fanny straight in here and spend the necessary cash to get me into shape.

Go in; they will be polite and chill and helpful, really really helpful.

this is where you buy running shoes in san francisco.

not where you "should", or where i "recommend" you buy running shoes, but where you buy them.  i'm somewhat of a running junkie/nerd/snob, so i've been to many a running store in my life and was extremely impressed with fleet feet.

even though i know what type of shoe supports the bio-mechanics of my foot, i like to get fitted every time i go to a different store just to see if the staff is knowledgeable.  this isn't easy because my gait doesn't naturally lend itself to one specific category, but they nailed it.  they gave me the choice between two shoes (one of them was the shoe that i currently wore for running, but they didn't know that) and really took the time to help me make a decision.  i did, and i actually like the shoe they recommended more than my previous shoe.

some shoe stores can be intimidating, or may just slap the most expensive shoe on your foot; this place didn't seem like that at all.  its nice to be fitted for a running shoe, by a runner, and they do that here.

Fast and efficient service with the technical know-how where your athletic feet is concerned.  Stopped by during the lunch hour for a quickie to get new running shoes in preparation for a half a marathon run.  Tsdale Tomlinson's customer service with a smile came with lightning fast execution.  I simply informed her that my existing Asics running shoes are worn out, gave my size, and in a heartbeat, my new running shoes were tried and fit.  During the checkout process, she ensured that my shoe profile was entered in their customer database, to save time in the future.  They're a fast Fleet Feet store!

In a matter of minutes, my chore was accomplished and I was in time for my 1pm lunchdate.

I had a real simple question that I could not get an answer to anywhere which was how can you tell when running fred containers (shoes) need to be replaced?
Went to both Craigslist and the Nike store and I got blank stares. No one had an answer.
Anyway I was on Chestnut Street and I stopped off at Fleet Feet and they showed me a simple test. Mind you, the mileage I put on since February meant this pair had to go into the bin.
